Biography

The man later known as John Van Blarcom was baptized as "Jan" on 25 December 1698 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Hackensack, New Jersey, recorded as the child of Peter Jansen and Jacquemina Cornelese. WItnesses were Jan Lubberse and his wife Magdaleene (young Jan's paternal grandparents).[1]

His parents were Pieter Janse (Van Blarcum), son of Jan Lubbersen, and Jacomyntje Cornelis, daughter of Cornelis Mattyssen “van Stockholm” and Barentje Dircks “van Meppel.”[2]

He married Jannetje Lent or Lanker at Acquackenonk, New Jersey, on 25 March 1726.[3][4]

The family lived in the general area of modern upper Bergen County, New Jersey, and lower Rockland County, New York, where the state boundary line was in dispute and where there are virtually no old land records. The last two recorded children were recorded at Tappan, New York.[5]

Zabriskie identified the following as the probable children of Jan and wife Jannetje:[6]

  1. Pieter, baptized 23 April 1727 at Hackensack, apparently died young.
  2. Elizabeth, baptized 9 May 1731 at Hackensack; married Lucas Van Blarcom.
  3. Martha
  4. David, born December 1736, a twin.
  5. Pieter, born 14 December 1736, baptized 23 January 1737 at Tappan, New York.

Zabriskie noted that Nelson (source to be determined) had identified son Pieter baptized 1727 as having married Susannah Calyer in 1745, but Zabriskie rejected that because the birth of a brother of the same name indicated that the first Pieter had died young, and the Pieter baptized in 1736 also could not have married Susannah Calyer in 1745, as he was only 9 years old.

John Van Blarcom Jr., the eldest son of Pieter Jansen Van Blarcom, was appointed administrator of his father Pieter's estate on 31 March 1749.[7]

Research Notes

LNAB

Since the father was recorded with a patronymic name at this child's baptism, we need to look to other records to determine an LNAB for him. He is recorded as Van Blerkom at his marriage, so his LNAB by New Netherland conventions is van Blerkom (correction made for the case on the preposition "van"). Other trees online seem to have the wife as Jannetje Lanker/van Lent citing a marriage on 25 March 1726. That seems to be more reliable unless there are unstated sources for Jannetje Ackerman being the wife.

There are no valid sources on this profile, and I suspect the same may be true of "other trees."

Let's not make big changes until there is sourced information to support them. :-)

I have added some solid sources to this profile, supporting the marriage to Jannetje Lanker and baptisms of children with Jannetjen Lent, so we don't have to rely on other online family trees. Additionally, I have seen that some online trees give her names like "Ackerman Lent Lanker," which suggests that some folks have conflated Lent with Ackerman. And finally, I have found no evidence for the supposed parents of Jannetje Ackerman having a daughter of that name. Accordingly, I will disconnect Jannetje Ackerman from this profile and from the profile for the daughter Martje.
